Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies in the US. While it can cause health challenges, so too can having too much iron. Healthy iron levels are essential for the transport of oxygen via red blood cells, the conversion of blood sugar to energy, and the production of enzymes, amino acids, hormones, and neurotransmitters. Genetic mutations can influence iron availability, uptake, and utilization.
In this presentation, we review the many qualities of iron—the alchemical metal of Mars. Iron has a long history of symbolism in the concepts of magnetism, strength, fortitude, and courage. It is the most common metallic element in the universe, and is ubiquitous in our solar system, our soil, within the history of the development of human culture, and within our bodies. We explore the difference between heme and non-heme iron, and the variation in transport pathways that allows the body to use these two forms. Omnipresent in nature, foods and botanicals contain nutritional iron that supports a healthy level of functioning, as well as stored iron.
